REACH Haiti - 2010

We began operations in Haiti 2010 with a summer camp for 50 children in Mirebalais.  RH provided school furniture, water and latrines, meals, sports and classroom experiences.  Our objectives were to help prepare children for school in the fall and for us to gain insights into the realities of local education.  On October 4, 2010, we opened the doors of the school to 225 children and a Haitian staff of 23.

In January, RH developed a multi-year vision that correlates with the Haitian National Pact report presented to the government early in 2011.  We have now begun to implement education projects that fit within the vision.

In July 2011, RH partnered with RVIZ on another summer camp for 240 extremely disadvantaged children in the area of Varreux, Port-au-Prince. The camp was a first for the area and was very well received.  We have been asked to join with RVIZ in supporting the school in the same location and developing future programs.

Some information about School Le Bon Samaritain area

The region is labeled by the authorities Varreux "Bloc 1" and is made up of 16 smaller districts (all the Cites on the Est side of the National road. West side aka Cite Soleil not part of it). They are:
Cité Dieuseul - Cité Simon - Villa l'Union: (smallest of the Cités) - Simon - Cité Pele - Richard Brisson: (where school is located because of accessibility and more or less central position) - Bayarond- Kim Savon - Cité Absalon: (near Missionaries of Charity Hospital where we have 3 acres of land offered by the Missionaries to build a youth training center - our next project) - Fabien - Cité Reno - Village Solidarité - Bergerac - Cité Militaire: (near Delmas 2 route piste).

The total population in this region is of nearly 300,000 people (when including Cite Militaire) of which 25% makes up an adolescent population or around 76,000 up to the age of 18. The age group we are concerned with could reach as many as 25,000 in the region however there are several schools in Bloc 1 and Le Bon Samaritain de Varreux located in Richard Brisson attends to the schooling needs of over 300 children (358 last school year - 320 as you say as a min. target for the summer camp activity) of only the most vulnerable and disenfranchised families (below poverty line of $1.25 per day) from the cited neighborhoods. These kids would have absolutely no chance to attend any school institution if it wasn't for Ecole Le Bon Samaritain de Varreux.
